The shipping carbon question — what actually counts and what doesn't

Per-package shipping carbon ranges from ~50 g CO₂e (EU local last-mile bike courier) to ~3 kg CO₂e (Asia-to-EU direct air freight). The variance is two orders of magnitude. Carbon-neutral shipping labels rarely tell you which end of the range you're on.

The shipping carbon range, with real numbers

Approximate per-package carbon ranges, EU consumer context:

Local last-mile only (already-imported, regional warehouse to home): 50-300 g CO₂e

EU consolidated freight + local last-mile: 200-700 g CO₂e

EU sea freight + last-mile (from Asia via consolidation): 500-1,500 g CO₂e

Direct air freight from Asia to EU consumer: 2,000-3,500 g CO₂e

The two orders of magnitude is what matters. A 'carbon neutral shipping' badge that offsets the high end is doing 10× the work of one that offsets the low end.

Why most 'carbon neutral shipping' offers are weak

Three structural weaknesses:

1. The offset is the cheapest available, not the highest-quality. Offset prices range from €2 to €40 per tonne CO₂e depending on project type. Cheap offsets are usually low-quality. A €1 add-on at checkout funds €1 of offset; that's a few hundred grams of credit at decent-quality, which barely covers a low-end EU shipment, let alone a direct-air-freight one.

2. The carbon calc is industry-average, not actual. Most carbon-neutral shipping providers (DPD, DHL, Hermes) use route-and-vehicle averages. The actual emission of your specific package isn't measured.

3. The offset retirement isn't transparent. Most shipping carriers state 'we offset' without saying which registry, which project, with what serial number, retired when. The credibility chain is broken at the verification step.

What actually reduces shipping carbon

Consolidation. Local sourcing. Last-mile efficiency.

Consolidation: shipping 1,000 packages in one container from Asia to EU has 1/10 the per-package carbon of shipping the same 1,000 individually via air freight. Vendors that consolidate via EU regional warehouses (often via 3PLs in Rotterdam, Hamburg, Dublin, Madrid) get a 60-80% per-package reduction.

Local sourcing: EU-manufactured furniture shipped within EU has 1/3 to 1/2 the per-package carbon of equivalent product made in Asia. The intra-EU rail and short-haul truck network is much lower-carbon per tonne-km than ocean-then-truck.

Last-mile efficiency: the last 5km of any package delivery is disproportionately carbon-intensive. Diesel-van delivery is ~3× the carbon of cargo-bike delivery for the same package. Brands working with bike-courier networks (Pedalme, Whistl Cargo, DPD's Citybox, Velocity Couriers) are doing real reduction.

What you can do as a consumer

1. Choose EU-manufactured over EU-imported where the price difference is reasonable. Even a 10-20% price premium often delivers 50%+ shipping-carbon reduction.

2. Pick standard delivery over express. Express is more likely to be air-freighted within the carrier network. Standard is more likely to be consolidated road or rail.

3. Bulk small orders. Two €40 orders in one month have higher per-package carbon than one €80 order. Many brands now offer 'wait and consolidate' or 'subscribe and save' for exactly this.

4. Be sceptical of 'free same-day' on cheap items. Same-day from a distant warehouse is usually high-carbon. If it's same-day from a regional warehouse it's much better.

5. Read the country of dispatch. 'Made in China, ships from Germany' vs 'Made in China, ships direct from Shenzhen' is a different shipping-carbon profile even with the same source.

What IMPT does on shipping carbon

shop.impt.io vendor policy requires that vendors shipping from outside the EU to EU consumers route through one of IMPT's consolidation partners (Rotterdam, Hamburg, Dublin). Direct air freight from Asia to individual EU consumers is not permitted on shop.impt.io.

Full policy on vendor onboarding. The consolidation routing reduces per-package shipping carbon by approximately 60% versus direct air freight equivalents.

The carbon mechanic on shop orders specifically (an on-chain retirement per order) is on the roadmap — see sustainability methodology. Until then, the consolidation-routing requirement is the credible policy lever.

Same nightly rate as the major OTAs, with two extras: 1 tonne of UN-verified CO₂ retired on-chain per stay (paid from IMPT's commission, not the guest), and 5% back per booking (3% to a carbon cause, 2% to next-stay credit).
