The EU Digital Product Passport — what it changes for sustainable shopping
Digital Product Passports under the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) are coming. Done right, they're the single biggest transparency win in two decades.
What the Digital Product Passport actually is
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a digital record attached to a physical product — accessible via QR code or NFC tag — that contains:
- The product's material composition - The origin (factory, country) and supply-chain tier-1 suppliers - Carbon footprint data per the EU PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) methodology - Repair information (parts, manuals, authorised repairers) - End-of-life routing (recycling, take-back, hazardous-material handling) - Compliance documentation (CE mark, REACH, restricted-substances) - Ownership history (for goods where this matters: vehicles, large appliances)
The data is stored on infrastructure mandated by the EU, accessible to consumers, repairers, recyclers, and regulators.
Timeline + categories
The ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) was adopted in 2024. DPP rollout is staged:
- 2025-2026: Batteries (EU Battery Regulation 2023, separate from ESPR but the model is the same) - 2026-2027: Textiles, footwear, furniture - 2027-2028: Electronics, ICT equipment, white goods - 2028-2030: Construction products, chemicals, food packaging - 2030+: Broader product categories
The first wave (textiles, footwear, furniture) is the one most consumer-relevant and the one most likely to surface in marketplace product pages over the next 24 months.
What changes for shoppers
Six concrete changes:
1. Material composition you can trust. No more '70% recycled' without proof. The DPP will require third-party-verifiable percentages with source documentation.
2. Supply-chain transparency by default. The 'we don't share supplier info' answer becomes non-compliant. Brands publish tier-1 suppliers or fail compliance.
3. Carbon footprint per unit. EU PEF methodology will produce comparable per-unit numbers across products. Side-by-side carbon comparison becomes possible.
4. Repair info on the product. Where parts are sourced, who's authorised to repair, what the typical repair costs. Cuts the 'just replace it' default.
5. End-of-life routing clearly stated. Where the product goes, what's recyclable, what isn't. Reduces the 'I don't know what to do with this' landfill default.
6. Counterfeit detection. The DPP serves as authentication — fake products won't have valid DPPs.
What changes for marketplaces
Three structural changes:
1. Marketplaces become responsible for DPP availability. A marketplace selling a textile product post-2027 will be expected to surface the DPP info on the product page. 'Vendor didn't supply' is not a compliant answer.
2. Editorial criteria become regulator-aligned. Sustainability claims that today rely on certifications + voluntary disclosure will tomorrow rely on standardised DPP fields. Easier to verify, easier to compare across products.
3. Vendor onboarding adds DPP integration. Marketplaces will need DPP-data-import in their onboarding flows. Vendors without DPP-ready data become deprecated.
This is the regulatory floor; marketplaces wanting to position above the floor will need to surface DPP data more accessibly than minimum compliance requires.
Where Shop IMPT + shop.impt.io will land
Our published vendor onboarding already collects most of the DPP fields (country of manufacture, materials composition, certification IDs, repair information where relevant). The DPP becomes the standardised carrier for this data; the underlying requirements don't change much.
We'll integrate DPP read at the product-page level in the 2026-2027 textiles + furniture wave, ahead of the regulatory deadline. Goal: every featured product on Shop IMPT editorial has a visible DPP-style data block by end of 2027, regardless of regulatory deadline.
The broader expectation: DPP changes the floor of marketplace sustainability claims. Marketplaces that today position on sustainability but don't have the data infrastructure to surface DPP will struggle. Marketplaces that pre-invested (we count Wolf & Badger, Earth Hero, Made Trade, and ourselves in this category) will benefit from regulator-aligned positioning.
The longer-term implication
DPP is the most important transparency development in consumer goods since the EU REACH chemicals regulation in 2007.
For shoppers: the era of 'is this sustainable' as a research question shifts toward 'compare these three on standardised data'.
For marketplaces: 'sustainable marketplace' as a marketing claim ages out, replaced by 'this marketplace surfaces complete DPP data well'.
For vendors: a step-change in supply-chain transparency requirements. The brands building toward this now will land softly; the brands waiting will struggle to comply.
For the broader category: this is the regulatory architecture that makes credible sustainability comparison possible at scale. Worth tracking.
